Spicy Italian Sausage Penne recipe


This is a pasta dish with a spicy twist. It has Italian sausage, penne, and a creamy tomato sauce. You cook the pasta, make the sauce with sausage, and mix them together. Then you sprinkle cheese and herbs on top.


6 Italian sausages
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
340 g penne pasta
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp red pepper flakes
240 ml heavy cream
1 lemon
1 Tbsp sugar
20 g basil leaves
30 g grated mozzarella cheese
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste


Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook until al dente, about 11 minutes. Drain and set aside, reserving 1 cup of the pasta water.
While the pasta is cooking, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Squeeze the sausage meat out of the casings and into the pan. Break the meat apart with a spatula and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.
Add the diced onion to the sausage and cook until soft, about 3 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for another minute.
Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes. Pour in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Zest the lemon and squeeze its juice, then add both zest and juice to the sauce along with the sugar. Stir well to combine.
Add the cooked penne to the sauce, tossing to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add some reserved pasta water until the desired consistency is reached. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Tear the basil leaves and stir most of them into the pasta. Save some for garnishing.
Serve the pasta in bowls, topped with grated mozzarella cheese and the remaining basil leaves.
