Pretzel Bites recipe

These are yummy, twisty bread snacks. They are brown and salty on the outside, and soft inside. You can make them with flour, water, and a few other things. They're fun to shape like a twist!

Ingredients

1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
1 tablespoon sugar
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
10 cups water
2/3 cup baking soda
1 large egg, beaten
Coarse sea salt, for topping

Method

1
In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
2
Add the flour, kosher salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
4
Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
5
In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Slowly add the baking soda (it will bubble up).
6
Turn the risen dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and cut into 1-inch bites.
7
Boil the pretzel bites in the baking soda water for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheets.
8
Brush each pretzel bite with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
9
Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
