Irish wheaten bread is irresistibly easy to make, and with no yeast or a long rising, also very quick. This brown soda bread is perfect for tea time.
Ingredients
4 1/2 cups/500 grams whole wheat flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2 1/4 cups/500 milliliters buttermilk
Method
1
Gather the ingredients. Heat the oven to 400 F (200 C or Gas Mark 6).
2
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and baking soda. Add the buttermilk and stir to form a loose dough.
3
Lightly dust a clean work surface with flour and turn out the dough. Knead the dough gently a few times until smooth.
4
Shape the dough into a ball and flatten to roughly 2 inches (5 centimeters) thick. Using a sharp knife, lightly slash the surface of the dough in the shape of an X.
5
Place the dough on a greased baking sheet and bake in the oven for 30 to 35 minutes until well risen and light brown in color.
6
Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
